13 November 2024Sofia Municipality plans to raise the tourist tax starting from 2025, pending approval from the Sofia Municipal Council. This increase comes after the tax rate remained unchanged for over a decade, according to Deputy Mayor for Tourism Nikola Barbutov.

The proposed updated rates for accommodation are as follows:

  • Apartments and hotels with 1 star – BGN 1 per night (now BGN 0.40);
  • 2-star hotels – BGN 1.50 (currently BGN 0.60);
  • 3-star hotels – BGN 2 (before BGN 0.80);
  • 4-star hotels – BGN 2.50 (plus BGN 1 per night);
  • 5-star hotels – BGN 3 (currently BGN 1.20).

Tourist Tax - туристическа такса

The tourist tax (туристическа такса) is an overnight accommodation tax levied to visitors per person per night. If the accommodation is located in a designated tourist resort, the tax is only levied for the first night.

The rate to be paid is set by local governments (municipalities) within the 0.20 – 3.00 BGN Lev band set by national government. Further information here.
